One of the first people I met when I started coming to Crossroads Community Church was Bill and it wasn’t because I was introduced to him it was because he introduced himself to me. For me this was pretty cool considering that back then I looked like the kind of guy you wouldn’t really want to get to know. That didn’t matter to Bill though because he’s just that kind of guy that care’s about people no matter who they are. I knew for awhile that Bill, his brother James and a few other guys including the pastor were hunters but I had never gone hunting in my life.
Bill kept persisting after several years that I should go hunting with them and I always declined because I had no experience and didn’t want to be the guy he had to lug around. I finally told him that one day and he said “Is that all you’re worried about?” and went on to assure me that he would love to teach me to hunt and didn’t care at all about the fact that I’m a slow moving guy and not in the greatest shape. I always knew and thought Bill was a cool guy but I had no idea how much compassion he had in his heart until he took me under his wing and taught me how to hunt. I’m starting my second season soon with Bill and the guys this Fall 09 and I can’t wait! It’s not so much the idea that I might land that trophy buck but because it means I get to spend time with my friend Bill.
Of course there’s more to this than just my story alone and even though this is more of a seasonal ministry it’s memories last all year long and leave those waiting for upcoming hunting season in an anxious state. This brings me to the ministry part of things. You see, Bill just didn’t befriend me and teach me to hunt he has also taken people of all ages and genders and not only taught them about safety and the thrill of the hunt but has also taught them about how powerful God’s love is and how important it is that Jesus Christ did what he did for us. He also makes sure to take the time before we go off into the wild to pray for our safety and to thank God for His blessing of nature. For kids he has what he calls “God’s Wilderness Adventures” which is an exciting thing to be a part of for children. So for all these reasons and more make sure if you’re a hunter or an aspiring one, to take the time to meet Bill and join us on the hunt and get Fired Up For Jesus!
